Protecting Your Investment: What You Can Do For Your Teeth
We all want to do what is best for our teeth. However, doing what is best means different things for different people. Everybody knows that the most important thing to do is to brush and floss. This does not mean just "going through the motions," as there are certain techniques that clean teeth better than others. Ask your dentist or hygienist to show you how to properly and effectively brush and floss. One thing they may recommend is the use of an ultrasonic toothbrush, which does not rely as heavily on technique and has been shown to clean teeth more efficiently than a standard toothbrush.
You should see your dentist at least one or two times a year. This is particularly true if you have had a significant amount of dental work done. The reason for this is that if something is wrong with one of your teeth and the dentist or hygienist can catch it early enough, it can be relatively easy and inexpensive to fix. On the other hand, if it is not seen until much later, the procedure required to fix it may involve more complicated and expensive treatment. If a tooth with a crown gets decay, for example, simply repairing the crown may not be enough. The crown may have to be redone. If the decay is very extensive, you may need root canal treatment as well, or you may even lose the tooth. This will lead to more involved treatment options such as a bridge or an implant. If you have a bridge where only one of the teeth in the bridge gets decay, for example, it may not be possible to simply fix that one tooth. Instead, the entire bridge may have to be redone. If you have already invested a significant amount of your time and money into the initial treatment, it makes good sense to take care of that investment. Neglect of your dental work can only lead to more extensive, more expensive, and more time-consuming treatment options.
Another good preventive measure is a nightguard. A nightguard is a hard piece of plastic that is custom made to fit over your teeth and is worn at night. The purpose of a nightguard is to protect your natural teeth and/or crowns from the increased wear and excessive forces that may be applied, especially if you grind your teeth. We will make the determination of whether or not you need a nightguard after examining the wear on your teeth, your bite, and your muscles.
The last preventive measure is the use of fluoride. With the advent of bottled water and the possibility of living in an area with non-fluoridated water, using toothpaste with fluoride has become more important than ever. The fluoride present in toothpaste will help fight cavities, but in some people more protection may be needed. In these instances, the dentist will make custom fitting plastic trays that can be used to hold a stronger fluoride gel. The gel is by prescription only. The purpose of the tray is to help keep the fluoride in contact with your teeth longer. The use of this type of fluoride is particularly helpful for people who experience dry mouth. Dry mouth may occur for many reasons. The most common is the use of a variety of prescription medications, ranging from anti-depressants to heart medications, which cause dry mouth as a side effect. Having a healthy amount of saliva is very helpful in preventing decay. People who do not have an adequate amount of saliva or who currently have a significant amount of decay have an increased risk of developing decay. It is for these people that that use of fluoride gel in a custom tray is a very important part of preventing the onset of extensive decay and thus protecting the investment they made in their dental health.
