All About Systemic Disease Screening

What are Systemic Disease Screenings?

Systemic disease screening is something that we do because we care about more than just your teeth and gums. We want our patients to be completely healthy.

Check out the crease in President Bush’s ear lobe. That is called Frank’s sign and is correlated with coronary heart disease.

How do you do these screenings?

R
Diabetes. With a simple finger prick, we can test for diabetes by finding out the A1c in 6 minutes.
R
Coronary heart disease. By observing the ears, looking for bilateral creases in the lobes, we know that there is a 75% correlation to heart disease.
R
Sleep apnea. We check the tongue, nose, tonsils, soft palate and neck for risk factors of sleep apnea. We also ask just the right questions to screen our patients.
R
Gastric reflux. We look for excessive wear on teeth, yellower teeth and a constant clearing of the throat which are telltale signs of gastric reflux.
R
Head and neck cancer. We screen the head and neck areas for lumps and bumps as well as skin cancer.
R
And many more. These are just the most common ones we see.
